An optical cloth has one job and one way to fail it. The job is to lift oil and dust off a coated surface without touching it hard enough to mark the coating. The failure is a hard thread dragged across that coating, which is exactly what a serged or overlocked edge does every time it goes round a lens.

So these are laser cut or ultrasonically welded: the edge is sealed by the cut itself, there is no thread anywhere on the cloth, and nothing sheds or frays into the frame of a pair of glasses. The face is a flat microsuede rather than a terry pile, because pile holds grit and a flat face does not.

The fibre is split, and you can check it without any equipment. Drag the dry cloth slowly across a dry palm: a split microfibre grabs and drags slightly, and an unsplit one slides like nylon. That single test separates a cloth that lifts oil from one that spreads it, and it is the reason so many branded optical cloths are quietly useless.
