Jewelry & Silver Polishing Cloths

A true polishing cloth is two layers. The inner layer carries a mild treatment — usually a fine polishing agent, sometimes an anti-tarnish compound — and does the work of lifting oxidation. The outer microfibre layer buffs the piece clean afterwards. Selling a single untreated cloth as a polishing cloth is common and it does not do the same job.

The limits are worth stating before anybody buys. A polishing cloth removes light tarnish and fingerprints from solid metal. It does not restore heavy black tarnish, and it must not be used on plated pieces where the plating is already thin, because polishing is an abrasive process and it removes material. On pearls, opals, coated finishes and antique patina it can do real damage, and we say so on the packaging rather than leaving it to a support email.

Will a polishing cloth remove heavy tarnish?

No, and a cloth sold on that promise will disappoint your customers. Heavy black tarnish needs a dip or a professional clean. We would rather that limit is printed on the sleeve than discovered by a customer rubbing at a piece for twenty minutes.

Only with care, and not at all where the plating is already thin. Polishing is abrasive by definition: it works by removing a microscopic layer, and on plate that layer is the product.
